Manuka Honey is generally used as a natural treatment internally and externally on the skin. It is also consumed as a tea or in a capsule as a health product.

Honey has been used by many different cultures throughout history. The Ancient Greeks and Egyptians used it as have many cultures over the ages. Even up to WW2 honey was being used for its antibacterial properties in treating wounds. Many of these uses are now being rediscovered by a modern world in light of new research into the properties and uses of Active Manuka Honey.

Honey and the treatment of cancer

Manuka Honey is being used for treating fungating wounds where cancer has penetrated the skin.

Active Manuka Honey has enjoyed growing acceptance by the academic and medical world as of late, and reports of Manuka honey's unique healing properties have proliferated in the press and media.

In laboratory tests, UMF Active Manuka Honey inhibited the growth of bacteria which causes many skin infections including antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria such as MRSA and VRE. Recent clinical trials at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, showed skin infections and wounds infected by "Golden staph" and other antibiotic-resistant bacteria responded well to Active Manuka Honey dressings.

Cancer specialist Dr Glenys Round has also found honey to be an effective treatment.

"We've been using honey to treat fungating wounds, where the cancer has broken through the skin," she said.

"The results in that situation have been excellent."

Most recently, she has had success in using honey dressings on patients with wounds or ulcers resulting from radiation therapy.

"Most of these patients in the past had tried various other conventional treatments without good success, and that is the reason why at least initially honey was tried."
